International parcels are generally divided into two categories according to billing methods. One is billed on the volume weight, and the other is on actual weight, among which the former is subject to stricter handling procedures. The reason? To keep the parcel’s volume to a minimum by compressing as much space as possible, so as to cut shipping costs.
Packaging for Parcels Billed On Actual Weight:
1. Bag Packaging. Place the item in the right-sized packaging bag without space compression. The final billable weight will not be affected even with some gaps left inside the bag.
2. Carton Packaging. The items will be placed orderly in the carton of appropriate size. Since the shape of the item or the fixed volume of carton cannot be modified forcibly, any gap no longer than 3cm can be filled directly with filling materials to keep the items from collision during transport (for gap longer than 3cm, the carton needs to be cut for further handling). The lightweight filling materials have no big impact on the actual weight, and help keep the carton from damages during transport.
Packaging for Parcels Billed On Volume Weight:
In this case, we should keep the parcel’s volume to a minimum to reduce the final billable volume weight.
1. Bag Packaging. Place the item in the right-sized package bag and ensure no gaps left inside the bag. Whenever any gap appears, just fold the bag properly.
2. Carton Packaging. Place the items in the carton of the right size. Any excessive part of the carton will be cut off to keep its volume to a minimum (the carton will be less secure in this way, but it helps you save on shipping costs)
